| Arizona Cypress is the only cypress native to the Southwest U.S. It is a medium sized evergreen with a dense, upright, conical crown. It has stout horizontal branches and a conical or rounded crown or sometimes an irregular shape. Tends to be more upright when young and more spreading with age and has aromatic blue-green, evergreen foliage. Its smooth reddish-brown bark under a peeling outer layer adds interest to the tree. Leaves are scale-like and grayish-green, bluish-green, or silvery. Cones are 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter, globe-shaped, dark reddish brown, with 6 to 8 shield-shaped woody scales. The cones mature in autumn of the second season but persist on the tree for many years. Though the tree grows slowly under natural dry conditions, it is a rapid grower (up to 3 feet per year) on better soils with a good moisture regime. It prefers altitudes of 3000 to 8000 feet. Arizona Cypress is drought-tolerant and ordinarily has few disease pests. |
