The Bald Cypress is a lofty, deciduous conifer of slender, pyramidal habit. It makes a stately tree for parks and yards. In spite of their association with southern swamps, Bald Cypress trees have moderate water requirements and grow well in colder, drier locations as far north as Minnesota. It should not be planted in high pH (>7.5) soils. The tree develops large flares at the base of the trunk, giving it a buttressed appearance. The fern-like needle leaves are dark green in summer and turn a rich brown in the fall. It is one of the few conifer trees that sheds its leaves in winter, allowing sunlight to filter through its crown. The "cypress knees" seen in swamps only develop when grown in or near water for most of the year. This species is adaptable to wet or dry sites and thrives in many soil types. Once established, the Bald Cypress is drought-tolerant, wind resistant, disease and pest free, and extremely long-lived.
