Gala is a cross of Cox's Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious developed by New Zealand plant breeders. Introduced to market in 1965, the signature of this crisp, aromatically-sweet, snappy apple is pinkish-orange stripes over a yellow background. Galas have gained great popularity among consumers in the past 15 years. The fruit is firm, juicy, fine textured, with a yellow white flesh. The Gala is sweet, with a slightly tart flavor. The Gala ripens early and stores well (shelf life-6 months in regular storage). Snacking and salads are primary uses. Partially self-fruitful. Increase yields with pollinator of Fuji, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, or crabapple
