Netleaf hackberry is a small tree that can withstand severe droughts, low fertility, and wide temperature ranges. It is native to the western US and is noted for its crooked stems, warty bark, and the smooth dried berries which may hang on well into the late winter. Its leaves are thicker than other hackberries, with conspicuous netlike veins on the lower surface; the upper surface feels like sandpaper. It is stroungly tolerant of the cotton root rot fungus and fairly resistant to disease and insects. |
