Zelkova is a hardy, fast-growing tree that is nearly pest free. Although this species is related to elms, it is not seriously troubled by many of the common elm problems (Dutch Elm Disease, elm leaf beetle and Japanese beetle). The tree will tolerate most soil types, including those with a pH to about 7.5 (not alkaline-tolerant), but prefers a moist deep loam. Established trees are fairly drought-tolerant, requiring little irrigation unless located in sandy soil. Zelkova makes a good shade tree, has easy fall cleanup, is tolerant of heat, drought, and wind, and is a good replacement for American elm. |
